Outdoor & Garden Electrics, in plain terms.
What it is
Outdoor sockets, garden and facade lighting, garden room and hot tub supplies, run in armoured cable and correctly protected.
Who it is for
Garden rooms, home offices at the bottom of the garden, hot tubs, workshops, and anyone running an extension lead out of a window.
When you need it
Before the landscaping goes in, while the ground is still open.
Why it matters who does it
A garden room supply is a submain requiring correct cable sizing over distance, its own protection, and the right earthing. It is not an extension of a ring final.
Start to finish.
Fixed price or day rate, whichever suits the job, agreed with you up front.
- Plan the route and agree the trench line.
- Size the cable for the run length and the load, not just the load.
- Bury armoured cable at depth with warning tape above it.
- Terminate, test and certify.
The specifics, for anyone who wants them.
Cable choice and depth
Steel wire armoured cable, buried at a sensible depth with marker tape above it, is the standard for a reason. Volt drop over a long run often means going a size up on the conductor, which is why a garden room 30m away costs more than one 10m away.
Hot tub supplies
A hot tub is a continuous high load in a wet location. It needs its own circuit, RCD protection, and an isolator positioned where you can reach it but not from inside the tub. Check the manufacturer current rating before assuming a 16A supply will do.
IP ratings in plain terms
IP65 handles jets of water and is the sensible minimum for anything exposed. IP44 is splash resistant and is only suitable somewhere genuinely sheltered. Fittings sold as outdoor are frequently only IP44.
Straight answers.
Can I dig the trench myself?
Yes, and it will save you money. We will mark the route and tell you the depth.
Do I need planning permission for a garden room supply?
Not for the electrics. The building itself may be a different matter.
Can you fit an outdoor socket quickly?
A single outdoor socket off an existing internal circuit is usually a short job. A garden room supply is not.
