Lighting Installation, in plain terms.
What it is
Design, supply and installation of recessed, surface, track and feature lighting, including switching, dimming and outdoor circuits.
Who it is for
Kitchen and bathroom refits, extensions, loft conversions, and anyone tired of one pendant in the middle of the ceiling.
When you need it
During a refit, before the plastering goes on, or whenever you are ready to stop living under a single ceiling rose.
Why it matters who does it
Downlights cut holes in a fire rated ceiling. The fittings and the installation have to restore that rating, and bathroom zones dictate what is allowed where.
Start to finish.
Fixed price or day rate, whichever suits the job, agreed with you up front.
- Set out positions on the ceiling with tape before cutting.
- Confirm colour temperature and dimming type.
- Install, including fire hoods and correct IP rated fittings where needed.
- Test, certify, and set the dimming levels with you.
The specifics, for anyone who wants them.
Fire rated downlights
Cutting a hole in a ceiling that separates floors breaches its fire resistance. Fire rated fittings, or intumescent hoods over standard ones, restore it. This is not optional, and it is a common find on an EICR in a house where someone fitted spots themselves.
Bathroom zones
Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower, zone 1 is above it to 2.25m, zone 2 extends 0.6m beyond. Each zone dictates a minimum IP rating and, in zones 0 and 1, a low voltage supply. It is the reason you cannot just put a normal downlight over a shower.
Dimming that actually works
LED drivers are either leading edge or trailing edge, and a mismatched dimmer gives you flicker, buzz and a fitting that will not go below half. We match the dimmer to the driver and set the minimum trim rather than leaving you with the default.
Straight answers.
How many downlights do I need?
Fewer than most people are sold. We work from the room size and ceiling height, and we set them out before cutting anything.
Warm or cool white?
For living spaces, 2700K to 3000K. For a task area or garage, 4000K. We will bring samples if you are unsure.
Can you fit lights I have bought myself?
Yes, as long as they are CE or UKCA marked and suitable for the location. We will say if they are not.
